INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

With an increasing awareness of the impact of electronic waste (E-waste) on the global environment and specific metal, plastic, and glass markets, there is need for a current and comprehensive report on E-waste covering technologies, demand trends, projected growth, new market opportunities, and appropriate investment levels.

This study examines the worldwide demand for electronic recycling, its markets, and growth opportunities. This study gives a clear, quantitative picture of the supply-and-demand scenario and highlights the technological and investment opportunities in the field.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

E-waste is an increasing problem within the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream. A profusion of electronic devices adds tons of E-waste materials, such as metals, plastics, and silica, in landfills and incinerators. A concerted effort to reclaim discarded E-waste from the MWS is being undertaken by virtually all countries, with varying degrees of success. This study will forecast future global markets for recovery, reuse, and disposal of E-waste.

Part of this analysis will focus on producer responsibility for appropriate recovery and disposal. With rapidly shifting global regulatory trends, led by the European Union’s directives, worldwide changes in the material composition and end-of-life (EOL) treatment of electric and electronic (E&E) equipment are being mandated. These policies are not only compelling manufacturers to migrate to nontoxic materials, but they also require manufacturers to manage the life cycles of those materials. This report analyzes the corresponding changes in market value and global demand for the metals, plastics, silica, and other materials that comprise E&E equipment.

The report provides market value and growth, forecast from 2009 to 2014, for recycled E&E materials together with an analysis of the underlying technological shifts. These include the transition to nontoxic materials, such as engineered plastics and lead substitutes, and advancements in recycling technology. Material revenue forecasts are also provided for each technology by end market. In addition, a detailed breakdown of current and emerging regulatory trends and profiles of leading companies in the global E-waste industry are provided.

This study analyzes waste generated from EOL E&E equipment. Waste generated through raw material extraction and manufacturing is outside the scope of this report.

SCOPE OF THE REPORT

This report contains 5-year revenue growth forecasts by technology type, end market for each technology, and regional growth. An analysis of the industry structure by technology type and by region is presented. A section on regulatory issues and a patent analysis from 2000 through 20010-03-15 is included.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This report is targeted primarily at those engaged in the design, manufacture, sale, use, recovery, and disposal of E&E equipment. Interested companies and organizations include the following:
  • Electronics and computer equipment manufacturers
  • E&E component manufacturers
  • Electronics and computer equipment recyclers
  • Plastics, materials, metals, and glass manufacturers and recyclers
  • Companies involved in the design and construction of electronics recycling facilities and those which service these facilities
  • Companies that supply equipment and services to recycling facilities, such as manufacturers of balers, conveyors, and granulators
  • Financial institutions that supply money for such facilities, including banks, merchant bankers, venture capitalists, and others
  • Personnel in end-user companies and industries that purchase and use recycled electronics, ranging from packaging companies to automobile manufacturers, including producers of consumer goods and industrial products
  • Organizations supporting responsible environmental product stewardship
  • Government agencies involved in the regulation of waste disposal and recycling
The market analysis can be of use to senior decision-makers, business development managers, and investment professionals, including engineers, product development managers, and economic analysts.
