Global Market for Yeast Products to Reach $9.2 Billion in 2019; Yeast Manufacturing Projected to Increase Regionally

September 30, 2014

Wellesley, Mass., September 30, 2014 –BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com) reveals in its new report, YEASTS, YEAST EXTRACTS, AUTOLYSATES AND RELATED PRODUCTS: THE GLOBAL MARKET, the global market for yeast products is expected to grow to $9.2 billion by 2019, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9% from 2013 to 2019.  Spirits yeast products are the fastest growing segment with a significant 12.4% CAGR.

As a result of the high demand for the end products for which manufactured yeast is used, the demand for yeast products is increasing. Europe continues to have the highest consumption of yeast and yeast products. Asia and notably China have the second highest regional consumption.

Consolidation from price pressure during the 1980s and 1990s resulted in the shutdown of many small yeast factories in a number of countries. This reduced the concentration of yeast manufacturing globally, which is currently dominated by eight internationally operating companies.  However, in the last few years this trend has been reversing and countries that previously abandoned yeast production are now reconsidering. They realize the strategic importance of yeast in the production of bread and the provision of a protein source for livestock, which is ultimately contributing to an increasing independence from imports.

“In the past yeast manufacturing was considered a low-value, high-investment product. The perception of yeast as a strategic product for bread and beer production is now motivating governments in a number of African and Asian countries to promote programs to rebuild local yeast production,” says BCC Research chemicals analyst Dr. Ulrich März. “The number of companies operating on a global scale is no longer declining but trending to increase again.”

Yeast manufacturing is a multibillion dollar business and it is not only beer and baker’s yeast that generate high turnovers. The spirits industry is also a major consumer of yeast and feed yeast, cell wall components, yeast for bioethanol manufacturing, active live-yeast and mineral yeasts. The growth in demand for autolysates is unprecedented. In a number of countries autolysates are on the market and propagated as natural, vegetarian spreads of high nutritional value.

YEASTS, YEAST EXTRACTS, AUTOLYSATES AND RELATED PRODUCTS: THE GLOBAL MARKET describes production costs for yeast, highlights the market dynamics of the most important cost factors and relates investment and production costs to the general economic frame in various geographic regions.
